Beginner Crochet Tutorial: How to Make a Teddy Bear | Mr. Teddy, the Bear
Meet Mr. Teddy – the cutest crochet companion for Easter, gifting, or nursery decor! This beginner-friendly amigurumi bear is worked in parts and assembled with simple stitches. Grab your yarn and hook, and let’s stitch up a little buddy together!
Materials Needed:
- 4 ply cotton yarn – Orange, Blue, Yellow, White
- 3 mm crochet hook
- Stitch marker
- Fiberfill stuffing
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Black embroidery thread or safety eyes
- Glue (optional)
Written Pattern – Mr. Teddy the Bear
Note: All parts are worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise mentioned. Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.
1. Arms (Make 2):
- MR, ch 1 - R1: 4 sc - R2: (inc) x 4 = 8 sc - Sl st, ch 1, fasten off with a long tail for sewing
2. Ears (Make 2):
- MR, ch 1 - R1: 6 sc - R2: (sc, inc) x 3 = 9 sc - R3–4: 9 sc - Sl st, fasten off
3. Muzzle:
- MR, 6 sc - R2: (inc) x 6 = 12 sc - Sl st, fasten off with a long tail
4. Bow:
- Ch 3, in 1st ch: 2 hdc, ch 2, sl st (first side) Ch 2, 2 hdc, ch 2, sl st (second side) - Wrap tail around center to form bow shape
5. Cap:
- MR, 6 sc - R2–3: 6 sc - R4: BLO, (inc) x 6 = 12 sc - Sl st, ch 1, fasten off with tail
6. Body:
- MR, 8 sc - R2: (inc) x 8 = 16 sc - R3: (sc, inc) x 8 = 24 sc - R4: 24 sc - R5: (5 sc, inc) x 4 = 28 sc - R6: 28 sc - R7: (3 sc, inc, 3 sc) x 4 = 32 sc - R8: 32 sc - R9: (7 sc, inc) x 4 = 36 sc - R10: 36 sc - R11: (4 sc, inc, 4 sc) x 4 = 40 sc - R12: 40 sc - Change color to Blue - R13: (9 sc, inc) x 4 = 44 sc - R14: 44 sc - R15: (5 sc, inc, 5 sc) x 4 = 48 sc - R16–21: 48 sc - R22: (5 sc, dec, 5 sc) x 4 = 44 sc - R23: (9 sc, dec) x 4 = 40 sc - R24: (4 sc, dec, 4 sc) x 4 = 36 sc - R25: (4 sc, dec) x 5 = 30 sc - R26: (3 sc, dec) x 6 = 24 sc - R27: (2 sc, dec) x 6 = 18 sc - R28: (sc, dec) x 6 = 12 sc - Add stuffing - R29: (dec) x 6 = 6 sc - Fasten off, close and hide yarn
Assembly Guide:
- Attach arms between R13–14, 14 stitches apart
- Ears at R3–5
- Muzzle from R5–9
- Eyes between R6–7 (6 sts apart)
- Cap between R1–5
- Bow just below muzzle on R13
- Sew or glue all parts in place securely
